Damen revealed that Petrodec created the new jack-up rig, Obana, by combining two used jack-ups transported to Rotterdam, along with constructing a new mid-ship section in Dubai.
Obana is intended for decommissioning complex offshore platforms in the UK North Sea.
Dutch Offshore Energy Solutions (DOES), which supported the conversion and provided agency and rental services to Petrodec, identified the original rigs as Brage and Gabrus. The new jack-up will be about 200 meters long. Damen also prepared the front and rear sections of the rigs, adding four new passageways via the mid-section, contributing approximately 300 tons of additional steel.
Further reinforcements for Obana’s two 60-ton cranes and the main crane boom rest added another 200 tons of steel. Damen assisted with installing the crane pedestals and boom rest.
The company also helped connect piping systems between the three sections, painted the hull and merged areas, including the main deck.
Damen recently introduced an innovative hull cleaning service using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), described as a first in France.
Peter Altena, Managing Director of Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam, commented: “This unique project required 500,000 work hours without a single lost-time incident, demonstrating the excellent collaboration between Petrodec and Damen Shiprepair. Together, we made history.”
After the mid-section arrived in November 2024, Obana’s 2,000-ton crane was transported from Liebherr in Rostock to Rotterdam and installed by Mammoet. The three sections, each about 80 by 230 meters, were then assembled at Damen’s largest dry dock in Western Europe.
