Singapore and Malaysia are considering importing offshore wind energy from Vietnam.

Malaysia’s MY Energy Consortium, formed by Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Petroliam Nasional Berhad, is partnering with a consortium of PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) and Sembcorp Utilities from Singapore to explore exporting renewable energy from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore. Announced at an ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, the agreement focuses on assessing the feasibility of transmitting power via a new subsea cable and the Peninsular Malaysia National Grid.

Leaders from the MY Energy Consortium highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to the ASEAN Power Grid vision to enhance regional energy security by creating a power transit hub. This collaboration aims to harness Vietnam’s renewable energy resources to deliver reliable, low-carbon electricity across borders.

Vietnam is developing and operating multiple nearshore wind farms and aims to achieve 6 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. The government’s long-term goal is to expand this capacity to between 70 GW and 91.5 GW by 2050.
