Turkey has discovered a massive gas field in the Black Sea.

A new natural gas field will be able to meet the needs of the Turkish population for nearly four years, according to President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He stated that the discovery was made by the company Türkiye at the Goktepe 3 field in the Black Sea. Drilling operations began on March 27 and concluded on May 16, carried out by the 7th-generation drilling ship Abdulhamid Han.

“We have discovered new natural gas reserves totaling 75 billion cubic meters. This volume alone is enough to cover the domestic consumption needs for approximately 3.5 years,” Erdoğan said. He added that the economic value of the discovery is around $30 billion. As part of the Sakarya project, a floating production platform will be used, significantly boosting the field’s economic impact.

The president also noted that the first phase of gas extraction is complete, with 9.5 million cubic meters of gas now being supplied daily—enough to meet the needs of around 4 million households.

Erdoğan emphasized Turkey’s goal to double production by 2026 and quadruple it by 2028, bringing the country closer to full energy independence.
